I ate the fair.
So [info]sylvia_wrath and I played hooky Thursday afternoon to get a headstart on the wonder that is the state fair. Thursday the rides and many of the exhibits are closed, but the food carts are open. We were able to get a lead on our required allowances of fried things.

So: Roasted corn, fries, coke, fried pickles, fried coke, drinks. We got there late, so many of the things that were open for lunch had closed, and despite me birddogging for her, L refused several BBQ sandwich opportunities. the fried pickles were exquisite, the fried coke, less so. If they'd managed to make a sort of fried coke cordial kind of thing, that would have been good. This coke-syrup-in-the-dough thing was sort of... cheating. The fried has to wrap around something.

We then retired to the house and sat around bemoaning our lack of impulse control.

Mmm, fried food. Mmm.

I can't quite bring myself to go to the Texas State Fair, myself. Glad you two had fun!

Wow! That sounds like the ideal way to go to the fair: no irritating cultural stuff, like the giant alligator and the audioanimatronic Richard Petty. Just fried food and more of it.

Los Angeles County has a fair in September. As you can guess, it isn't quite the same... sigh.

I always skip the silly fried stuff like fried oreos, or twinkies, or I guess this year it's Coke. That gimmicky stuff is strictly for the townies. You know as well as I that it is all about the fried pickles.

Mmmmmm, fried pickles.

OK - I'll have to try the fried pickles now...

We went yesterday/last night (spent a lot o' time there) and I was able to confirm that I indeed prefer the elephant-ear type fried dough to the funnel cakes. I find it important to verify that on an annual basis ;)

Amusingly, this is on my "top five reasons not to go back to Antarctica for a regular season" list. The State Fair (Ive missed it now for 5 years). Fried food. The states largest pumpkin, most talented quilter, most agile pig... Ahhh... The best things in life are free (or cost under $10). It also brings back NCSSM memories of running around with an accelerometer looking like a dork. Good times.

Well, you should get there this Saturday (we're going again to see the demolition derby). Crashing cars! Fried things! Fireworks!
